In this guide we’ll explore some of these great offerings as well as how you can get involved yourself.
Virtual Classes
One great option if you are looking for a workout you can do in the comfort of your home is virtual classes. These classes are held daily throughout the summer, so you are able to get in a great workout, even if you can’t make it to one of the in person classes! Some examples of the different activities offered are HIIT, dance, yoga, and bootcamp. The classes are held over zoom and you can get the link through either emailing fitness@bphc.org or signing up for the class on eventbrite.
Classes in the Sun
The highlight of this program are the multitude of in person classes held at parks all over Boston. This program was developed by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and the Public Health Commission to help bring fitness to the community! Everyone is welcome at these classes whether you're a beginner or an experienced athlete. The classes are also free to attend, making these classes even more accessible. There are often several different classes available each day at different locations, so there is something everyone can get involved with!
Some examples of classes include bootcamp, zumba, strength and conditioning, tai chi, yoga, and so much more! The classes are held in beautiful sunny parks so you can get some fresh air while enjoying a great workout. Examples of the locations include Elliot Norton Park, LoPresti Park, Winthrop Square, and more. Attending one of these classes at a park near you can be a great way to feel connected to your community!
Tips for First-Time Participants
Exercising outdoors can be extra motivating for many! However, it is important to remember to bring several items so you feel prepared to move in the heat. Some items we suggest bringing include a water bottle, sunscreen, and yoga mat. Another recommendation we have is to wear clothing that is suitable for working out in warmer weather. Moisture-wicking clothing can help keep you cool in the heat and prevent dreaded sweat stains. It’s also important to have proper footwear. This could include sneakers for classes where you spend most of your time on your feet or flip flops if you would prefer to be barefoot during a yoga session.
Another preparation tip includes having a small snack or light meal before the class so you feel energized throughout the workout. We suggest arriving 10-15 early to give yourself time to set up, check in, and mingle if you’re interested in getting to know others in your area. If the location is new to you, it's a good idea to figure out parking and transportation ahead of time so you don’t feel pressured. For the classes through Boston Parks Summer Fitness Series you have to sign up in advance online to let them know you will be attending. This process is super easy and completely free!
