Ride to the Beat: Competitive Indoor Cycling at Flywheel Sports Boston

By: Sarah Lapinsky

In the city of Boston, where fitness trends come through in the blink of an eye, there’s one new workout that has captured the attention of many -  indoor cycling. But Flywheel sports isn’t just any cycling class; it’s a high intensity, adrenaline-pumping experience that pushes you to become the best version of yourself. Each ride is matched to music with a competitive atmosphere that makes this fun way to move an exhilarating experience. The blend of cutting-edge technology with high-energy instruction has both beginners and advanced cyclists unable to get enough of these incredible workouts. In this post, we’ll dive into what makes Flywheel Sports stand out and why it might be a perfect fit for your own fitness journey.

The Flywheel Experience

The Flywheel experience is centered around a saying “Never Coast”, emphasizing their mission to create a motivating, welcoming, and performance driven space. To achieve this mission, each workout is highly based on statistics. Bikes are equipped with a screen showing 4 important numbers to help you track your progress. The first is Torq, referring to the level of resistance of the bike. The next is RPMs (rate per minutes) which represents the speed you cycle at. The final two numbers, Current Power and Total Power, are considered to be the best for tracking your progress. The main objective is to increase your power output each class, and the competition can get fierce with these scores.

Each workout itself is 45 minutes long, the perfect length of time for fitting movement into a packed schedule! The class begins with a warm up to help prevent injuries and best prepare your body. This is followed by a more intense portion consisting of 30 minutes of interval training. Interval training involves a higher speed or resistance separated by several breaks at lower speeds/resistance. The format of interval training is a great way to keep the workout interesting while pushing your body to achieve desired results. The workout finishes with an upper body portion to help make this workout more well-rounded. Finally, there is one last push followed by stretching so you walk out of each class knowing you gave it your all but still took time to help your muscles repair.

The Flywheel Community

Instructors at this gym create a positive environment to help you feel supported during each workout. While they will support you and make you feel welcome at each class, they will also be pushing you to work hard. When the music kicks off, they jump right in to give you the motivation you need to get the most out of your workout. Additionally, the other members of this gym help create a competitive atmosphere that will help you kick it into high gear during each workout. An app and website are available to help you track your progress, so you are able to see your growth as the workouts add up. While this all may sound intimidating to newcomers, the encouraging environment and judgment-free community will help you get started.

Location and Amenities

800 Boylston St Suite STE013, Boston, MA 02199

Flywheel sports has a great central location at the Prudential Center! The welcoming area is clean and organized with lockers for you to store whatever you may need during your workout. Additionally there are couches for you to relax and chat with others before the class begins. The studio itself has plenty of room, so you never feel as though you have to squeeze between bikes when getting on and off. After the workout there are bathrooms with showers available. However, with so many people going to use them at once there is often a line. We recommend taking the competitive energy from the class to race to be first in line, or waiting to shower at home if you can.

While the Flywheel Sports Boston location is currently closed, we have high hopes it will open again soon! The strong community and competitive nature made these classes a great addition to the fitness culture of Boston. In the meantime we recommend exploring some of the other incredible indoor cycling gyms in the area, so you can get all the skills needed to make it to the top of the leaderboard when Flywheel reopens!
